Protect and Recover Your Horses from Equine Influenza Virus

Posted

Horses contract the flu, Equine Influenza Virus (EIV), just the same as humans do. In an article by Stacey Oke, DVM, MSc she explains symptoms, treatment, and benefits of vaccination to protect horses from EIV.

After a diagnosis of EIV, horses generally need at least three weeks off from training, one week of stall rest for everyday of fever, reports Tom Chambers PhD, professor and infectious disease researcher at the University of Kentucky’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center, in Lexington. In addition, if complications such as secondary bacterial pleuropneumonia develop, horses can be out of commission for up to six months.

Recovering your horse with aquatic therapy in an underwater treadmill can improve their condition quicker than land treatments and return them to health safely.

Considering Other Effects of Flu: COSTS

QUARANTINE: While severe outbreaks may necessitate an official quarantine, individual isolation is generally the proper course of action. A widespread quarantine lockdown, as well as isolation, like with humans, can have consequences and make recovery more challenging.

RECOVERY: The cost of recovery can include typical treatment, but the effects of missed training and competition time can reach far beyond the horse and lost business. Utilizing aquatic therapy for treatment can improve outcomes in less time, saving you money and getting your horse back into good health and shape quicker.

PROTECTION: According to OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) “…protection from EIV was much better in vaccinated horses compared to unvaccinated, and horses correctly vaccinated over several years showed no clinical signs or were only mildly affected.” Frequent vaccination boosts antibody levels and reduces chances of illness. To avoid EIV at important times, work with your vet to map out vaccinations and boost at appropriate intervals.
